My De Beauvoir Diaries blog - 3 Ways to relax and unwind

Being able to relax and unwind is a really important for our health and wellbeing; but knowing to how switch off and find time to relax can sometimes be difficult. Being completely honest, this is something that I have always struggled with. My main problem is that I can’t sit still, I always feel like I should be doing something unless I’m ill or have completely done myself in at the gym. I just can’t seem to chill out!

I thought it was about time that I sorted myself out and start trying to take a ‘chill pill’ every so often. Over the past few months I have introduced some new techniques to help me unwind at the end of the day and give myself that much needed head space. These 3 things have really helped me to relieve stress, get a great nights’ sleep and be more productive in the day time. What’s not to like?

1. Meditation: I heard a lot of people talk about meditation and its benefits, but I didn’t really know what it was or how to do it. I imagined lots of people sat cross legged on the side of a mountain humming and swaying side to side. I just didn’t think I could take that seriously!

After my Dad passed away earlier this year I found it particularly difficult to get to sleep at night. One night, up late desperately searching the internet for help, I read an article about meditation and the various free apps you could download and use on your phone. There was no climbing up a mountain or humming involved so it sounded worth a try.

If you haven’t attempted to meditate before, I would recommend trying it alone at home in the most quiet space you have. There are many free groups out there, but as I burst out laughing on the first try I think it’s good to start solo. My plan was so use it to fall asleep so I tried it lying in bed, late at night.

After 8 months of nightly meditation, I fall asleep a lot faster than I used to. Sometimes I’m even asleep before the meditation has ended! You do have to get used to a soft voice telling you that all your troubles will melt away (hence the laughing earlier) but it really does work once you overcome that. My favourite apps to use are Headspace, Meditation Station and Sleep Easily.

2. Epsom salt baths: On my quest to relieve stress, I came across a YouTube video which was talking about the benefits of Epsom salt baths. I love a good long soak in the tub after a day at work so I picked myself some up from Holland & Barrett. The magnesium sulfate and blend of aromatherapy oils are great for relieving muscle tension and promoting relaxation, which is exactly what the doctor ordered.

The smell as I was pouring it in to my hot bath was amazing! It reminded me of being at a luxurious spa, I couldn’t wait to jump in. After 30 peaceful minutes in this lemongrass, peppermint and black pepper soak, I was extremely relaxed and ready to fall into my clean bed sheets for a peaceful nights’ sleep; which I certainly did. I would highly recommend trying this, it is super relaxing.

3. Herbal tea: I’m a big lover of herbal teas, especially peppermint and liquorice, so when Teami Blends reached out to me and asked if I would like to try out some of their herbal tea I of course said “yes please”. I was really looking forward to trying my relax tea and combining it with my nightly soak and meditation. I’ve now been drinking the tea right before bedtime for the past few nights and have drifted off to sleep with ease. I don’t know yet if this is just a coincidence, I will have to drink it in the evenings for a longer period of time to be sure of its benefits; but I do really like the refreshing flavours and I instantly feel more calm when drinking it.
