My De Beauvoir Diaries - How to start a wordpress blog in 5 easy steps

When I started this blog I didn’t know what WordPress was, let alone know how to host and build a website! Now, 3 years on, not only do I manage my own blog; I build and design websites for other people. I have learnt a vast amount reading articles online, and taught myself through trial and error. Having utilised online articles so much myself I have decided to introduce a ‘blogging tips’ category to My De Beauvoir Diaries, in the hope that it may help others figuring out how to set up a WordPress website or blog and stop many hours of shouting (possibly swearing) at your computer in frustration!

The first topic I will be covering is how to build a WordPress website or blog in just five easy steps…

let’s get started.

First of all, what is WordPress?

WordPress is a website creation tool written in PHP. It is now the most powerful and also popular blogging and website content management system around, with millions of people utilising it everyday.

You can choose to use and let WordPress host your site for you, or you can use and control the hosting of your website yourself. Both have pros and cons, and it will depend on your needs and desires as to which one you proceed with. Personally, I use as it gives me a lot more freedom to create and edit my websites. You can read more about the pros and cons of each here.

The 5 steps below are for creating a WordPress website or blog with (self hosted).

How to start a WordPress blog or website in 5 easy steps

1. Choose a domain name for your blog/website

First things first, what would you like to a call your blog/website? This is usually one of the hardest decisions to make; this domain name will be your brand so you want to make sure you are happy with it before you proceed. You can change your domain name later down the line, but this can get tricky and is a subject best covered in another post.

I use Go Daddy to host my blog (see step 2). They currently give a free domain name when you purchase a hosting package. All you need to do is search via their website to see if the domain name you would like is available. Once you have established this you can go ahead and choose a hosting package that will meet your needs and request this domain name at that point.

2. Choose a hosting package and set up your account

There are lots of hosting packages out there to choose from and it will depend on your requirements when choosing one that is right for you. If this is your first ever blog and you will only have one website, then a basic package is probably all you will need. If you want to host more than one blog/website then it’s best to buy a developer package that will give you the flexibility to do this.

Once you have decided on the package you can then add your chosen domain name to your basket and purchase both at the same time. You can also buy multiple domain extensions if you would like to own them too, for example;,,,

I would recommend choosing a host that offers 24/7 support. There has been several times late at night or very early morning when I have been working and needed to access this support, it would have been stressful if I couldn’t have accessed this there and then. Go Daddy are based in the USA but they have a local number for you to call on at no extra cost. From personal experience their customer service is excellent and they always go above and beyond to resolve any problem that may arise.

Once you have purchased your hosting package and domain name you can then install WordPress.

3. Install WordPress

To do this you will need to access the applications tab on the Cpanel (see below). Find where WordPress in listed under applications and click to install. You will then need to fill out the required fields and click OK, it may take a few minutes to install.

Remember, if you get stuck at any point, don’t be afraid to call the host support line and ask for help.

Once this is installed you can then log into the back end of you blog/website by copying and pasting the following url into your browser.

Remember to replace the words ‘yourdomainname’ with the domain name that you purchased in step 1.

4. Choose a WordPress theme and install

The template I use is called Galvani, which I purchased from Pipdig. There are thousands of WordPress templates out there, both free and paid for. My theme cost £49. Themeforest is also a great place to look.

Once you have chosen your template you will need to download the zip file and then install this via the templates area on your WordPress dashboard. Once you have done this you can then adjust your settings as required. Most template developers offer a service, for a fee, to install the template for you. I would suggest having a go at installing this yourself though first as it is quite straight forward.

5. Adjust WordPress settings

Before you jump in and start posting, take a few minutes to adjust your settings accordingly (see image below). You can set your reading, writing and discussion settings as required. One important setting I will highlight is permalinks. Ensure that you change these from the default setting to a format that suits you. I have mine set to ‘post name’ which automatically sets your URLs to http://yourdomainname /post-name, I like to make my posts timeless so I don’t include a date, but you can if you want to.

And there you have it! You are well on your way to managing your very own WordPress blog or website. Well done!
